Navratri is a time when fasting is observed in most parts of the country. Certain foods like sabudana (sago), potatoes, fruits and peanuts are preferred when one breaks the fast.
The aloo pulao, made with samvat rice is a popular dish at this time of the year. Potatoes are saut ed with cinnamon, dry ginger, turmeric and other spices and then pressure-cooked with rice for a tasty dinner.

Ingredients
Samvat rice 1 1/2 cups
Potato cubes 1 cup
Bay leaves (tejpatta) 2
Cloves (laung / lavang) 5 to 6
Cinnamon (dalchini) 1inch
Tomatoes (finely chopped) 1 medium size (optional)
Turmeric powder (haldi)2 tsp
Dried ginger powder (soonth)1/4 tsp
Chilli powder 1 tsp
Garam masala 1 tsp
Oil 2 tbsp
Salt to taste
For the garnish
Few mint sprigs
