The 2017 edition of the Mumbai Marathon is just around the corner and if you are planning to run it, this is probably that time when you are adding the final touches to your training regimen. But most novice runners or even those who have been running for a while now might have questions about the kind of clothes and shoes they should wear during the run. So, we spoke to Dr Vijay Shetty, Orthopedic, arthroscopic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, Dr. L. H. Hiranandani Hospital, and he gave us 6 essential tips all runner should keep in mind as they gear up for the big run.
Tip #1: Pick the right clothes
Runners should wear clothes made of very lightweight, sweat and skin friendly cloth. Most importantly it should be comfortable. Gear specifically made for running are easily available and a runner must make sure they wear the gear during their practice sessions as well, and not wear it for the first time on the day of their run. It is essential for a person running a marathon to understand that wearing comfortable clothes that do not cause any skin irritation or discomfort is essential to performing optimally during a marathon.
Tip #2: Women, invest in a sports bra made for an activity like running
In the case of women, they must make sure they wear a good sports bra during the run. Sports bras help support a woman's breast and prevent injuries. No matter what their chest size, a sports bra is essential as they are made to provide comfort during intense exercise, especially running.

While men might need to wear clothing that will help support their testicles (also known as running support shorts), if it is a straightforward run then it is not required.
Tip #5: Previously worn shoes are the best
The right running shoes are important for a comfortable run. But, it is essential to make sure that you do not wear new shoes on the day of run and instead use them during practice sessions as you will need to be comfortable in them on the day of the run. Tip#6: Buy the right shoes
You can suffer from discomfort or chronic foot problems if the shoes you are wearing aren't the right type. So investing in a pair of running shoes is a wise idea. This is because these shoes are made so that they are light, have enough cushioning for your feet and support your foot as they strike the floor. Some of them also have an in-built raised portion to support the arch of your foot and protection for your ankle to make sure you don't twist it.
