The Mumbai Marathon 2017 is set to kick off in barely a week from today. Considering this, it is very common to see people pushing themselves to do better in this last phase, but that practice might not the best thing for you to do. In this post Dr Nilesh Gautam, Head of Department of Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation at the Asian Heart Institute, shares tips on all the do s and don ts when you re just a week away from running the Mumbai Marathon.

Dos

1. Take it easy: Trying to push yourself at this time will only make you more prone to injury and fatigue. Pace yourself and learn to sustain for the length of the run. You may also like to read about tips to prepare for the marathon.

2.Run with your peer group: Age is a definite factor when you are trying to run the marathon. So if you are a first time runner make sure you run with people who are of the same age and have the same amount of energy as you. If they are too fast, you'll expend your energy trying to catch up and if they are too slow, you will get bored.

3. Stay hydrated by watching the weather changes: Keep a close watch on the weather conditions and gauge how it may be on the day of the run. Based on that, calculate the amount of fluid you will require when you run.

4. Have enough carbs: Make sure you eat well and give your body enough fuel to burn on the day of the run. Fruits like banana and supplements like Glocon C are instant energy boosters. You may also like to read about the meal plan for the perfect marathon run.

Don'ts

1.Try to improve your timing now: You already have got your best timing. This is not the time to better it. Instead give your body enough time to rest and recoup before the marathon.

2. Try anything new now: It is important that your body is accustomed to whatever you are going to do on the day of the marathon. If you push yourself too hard not you might suffer from electrolyte balance on the day of the run and lose out. So, stick to the old and staid.

3. Push yourself: If you feel tired, or any pain, ache or any symptom of some illness, which was absent during your practice sessions, seek medical assistance instantly.

4. Be a victim of peer pressure: Don t try to match up with your peers pace at this stage. Enjoying the run is what is essential.
