It's pouring cats and dogs and we are concerned about ways to prevent monsoon diseases. One common query most of us have is how to take care of feet during rains. Hopping over potholes and travelling in crowded trains and buses will leave your feet dirty and wet, which can put you at risk of infections. But this monsoon, pamper your feet with these three simple tips from Dr Kirti Sabnis, Infectious Disease Physician, Fortis Hospital, Mulund & Kalyan.

1. Choose the right footwear: Avoid wearing closed shoes, especially during monsoon as it allows water to accumulate. This can increase your risk of suffering from a medical condition known as trench foot, which is caused by the exposure to damp and cold conditions. Also, make sure you clean your footwear on a daily basis and let it air dry to avoid moisture from settling in. This is because, the presence of moisture can boost the growth of bacteria and further increases your risk of fungal infection. Moreover, do not wear wet socks. 2. Do not forget to moisturise: During monsoons, most of us avoid moisturising feet thinking the weather is cold and humid. However, it is not true. The feet have lesser lubricating glands which cause it to dry and this can also lead to cracks. It is essential to keep your feet well moisturised to stay away from developing cracked heels which can be painful. Hence, spread the moisturising cream evenly and gently around the foot, especially the heels after washing and patting dry.

3. Keep the feet clean: Make sure you clean your feet even if they don't get wet during rains. If you get wet, then wash the feet with lukewarm water. Add few drops of antiseptic liquid in the water and wash your feet properly. Also, make sure you pat it dry with clean towel. You can also wipeoff with wet tissue papers to remove the dirt and mud. Also, make sure you clean the area between the toes and toenails. Do keep the toenails short to avoid accumulation of unwanted dirt during rains.
