Low-calorie chivda recipe

Time to junk those high-calorie options with loads of preservatives for this low calorie chivda which is very easy-to-make and can be stored for many days. A good option for a mid-morning or an evening snack, beaten rice or poha seasoned with a right blend of spices makes this a delectable option.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Beaten rice (poha)1 cup

Raw peanuts (optional)1 tsp

Mustard seeds (rai / sarson)1/4 tsp

Green chillies, slit lengthwise 2

Curry leaves (kadi patta)4 to 5

Roasted Bengal gram (chana dal) 1 tbsp

Asafoetida (hing)

Turmeric powder (haldi) a pinch

Powdered sugar1 tsp

Oil1 tsp

Salt to taste

Method

  1. Roast the beaten rice (poha) and peanuts in a non-stick pan, stirring occasionally till the poha is crisp (approx. 3 to 4 minutes).
  2. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan, add the mustard seeds, green chillies, curry leaves and roasted Bengal gram and stir.
  3. When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida and turmeric powder and mix well.
  4. Add the roasted beaten rice and peanuts, sugar and salt and mix well.
  5. Cool and store in an air-tight container.
