Know your yoga pose: Sumeru Asana or Mount Everest pose

The Sumeru asana or Mount Everest pose is known to relax the muscles of your lumbar spine. It concentrates on the entire body and activates it. Hence, it is best practiced in the morning. It is one of the yoga poses that improve blood circulation. Yoga expert Mahua Deb,trainer, Defence Welfare Association and at Vishakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) shows the correct technique to practice Sumeru asana and its benefits:

Steps:

  1. From vajrasana, while inhaling come to all four, table top position.
  2. Exhale and straightening the legs and arms, take the bottom up towards the ceiling.
  3. Once comfortable in this pose, try to reach the forehead towards the ground, without bending the elbows or knees. You have to look towards your navel.
  4. Beginners may raise their heel to be able to reach the forehead to the ground. But ideally the heel should be on the ground.
  5. Hold posture for 30 seconds and release by bending the knee and sitting back in vajrasana.
  6. Exhale while lowering your knees and coming to all four. Inhale when you are in table top position and exhale when returning to normal position.
  7. Repeat minimum 3 rounds.

Contraindications:

  • Avoid this pose in high blood pressure, dizziness or wrist or shoulder pain.
