The push-up is a great exercise and it can be modified to hit different parts of the upper body. The staggered push-up is a classic variation which allows you to work both your triceps and chest muscles. The rule of thumb is that the further away your arms are during a push-up, the more you work your chest while the closer your arms are the more you work your triceps. Here's how you do a staggered push-up:
Step 1: Assume a normal push-up position with legs and arms straight with your hands under your shoulders.
Step 2: Place your right hand forward and the left hand a bit back, which will be your starting position.
Step 3: Lower your torso until it almost touches the ground, pause for a moment and then push back up as quickly as possible. This will be one complete rep. After completing one set, switch hands.
