Know your exercises: Good Morning

The exercise works your hamstrings (primary muscle worked), glutes, abs and lower back, though it's notorious for causing lower back injuries.

Good MorningThe Good Morning is one compound exercise that divides the bodybuilding community. Considered a more advanced exercise, it is revered by some for its effect on the hamstrings (primary muscle worked), glutes, abs and lower back while others vilify it for its high likelihood to cause injuries. While it definitely is an advanced move, when performed correctly, it has immense benefits. Also Read - 5-min workout routine to lose weight from your lower body

Good MorningStep 1: Keep a bar on the rack at shoulder height. Also Read - Handle your stress with the right exercise

Step 2: Take the bar on your shoulders the way you would for a squat (not on the top of your shoulders, but a little at the middle).

Step 3:  Keep your knees slightly bent.

Step 4: Begin by bending at the hips, moving them back as you bend your back while arched till it’s almost parallel to the floor. Make sure your spine is properly aligned.

Step 5: Reverse the movement by extending your hips and continue until you’ve returned to your starting position.  

Tips: If you’ve never performed this exercise before, ask a trainer to show you how to do it. It’s vital to maintain proper form and posture or you run the risk of lower back injuries.
