Know your exercise: Dumbbell shrugs

Dumbbell shrugs are isolation exercises that target your traps (the top of the back muscle right below your neck). It requires you to stand erect with a dumbbell in each hand with your arms at your sides which will be your starting position. This exercise can also be done with a bar, a cable machine and a barbell. Read how to do dumbbell shrugs properly.

1. Stand erect with a dumbbell in each hand with your arms at your sides, your palms facing your torso.

2. This will be your starting position.

3. Exhale as you raise the dumbbells as high as possible by elevating your shoulders; keep your arms extended at all times and move only your shoulders up and down.

4. Hold the contracted position for one second, then inhale as you slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.
