Erratic meals and excessive consumption of refined stuff like processed flour, routinely eating packaged foods, depending on caffeine to kick-start the day and mixing foods indiscriminately can severely affect the health of your gut. Another very common cause of acidity is a sedentary lifestyle. A stressed and anxious mind could also hit your digestive function acutely. Another particularly obnoxious thing is having an extended and long dinner which runs too close to the bedtime. This is a major contributor to the overall ill health, particularly in the gut. So, the next time you suffer from acidity at work, perform jal shaamak mudra or water-decreasing hand gesture recommended by yoga expert Shameem Akthar for instant and quick relief.

Sit comfortably in sukhasana or the easy pose. You can also only sit comfortably on your chair while performing the mudra.

Press your little finger down with your thumb. Do this with both the hands.

Make sure that you sit with your eyes closed with your hands on your knees for a minimum of three minutes.

You can do this several times during the day if you get frequent acidity attacks. These yoga asanas also help relieve acidity.

How it works: In yoga therapy, the thumb is believed to represent the fire element and the little finger the water element. Pressing the little finger down can control the excessive water (in this case acid). The thumb also experiences a pressure thus reducing the fire element or inflammatory conditions. This mudra also has a de-stressing effect. And since stress is linked to acidity levels, performing this mudra can give immense relief. Also, get fit at work with these expert-recommended exercises.

Other benefits: This mudra also offers relief in congestion and is soothing in diarrhoea. It is also therapeutic in menorrhagia or excessive bleeding during menstruation.
