About one and half times sweeter than regular sugar, agave nectar is a popular substitute for sugar, honey or maple syrup in many homes. Agave was also used to heal wounds and infections along with salt in the olden days. Besides the fact that you need a lesser quantity of it, this ingredient has quite a few health benefits too. Agave nectar has a low glycaemic index and hence is a preferred substitute for table sugar than maple syrup or honey. The GI of agave is 13 as compared to table sugar which is 58. Is agave nectar better than sugar?

While the low glycaemic index of agave nectar is a plus point, the calorie count of agave is higher. Moreover, the high fructose content can have a negative impact on the liver if agave is consumed in higher proportions. Also, the processing methods reduce its nutritional value.
