Her fear of turning obese and a nasty comment triggered the decision to lose weight. Let us take a look at her incredible weight loss journey.

I have been through a lot of phases in my life. As a kid, I was always chubby, and I was called cute. I enjoyed this till I was 14 but as soon as I turned 16, people started calling me fat though I never felt overweight. It was when I started college that I got introduced to this amazing junk food addiction. I would eat out every day-- burgers, pastries, and chips, all that I could. As a result, in no time, my weight shot from 46 kg to 70 kg.

What motivated you to lose weight?

I was too self-consumed to notice how my weight was affecting my health. I started having hormonal issues, and, as a result, had serious acne vulgaris, which is a severe case of acne. I had red marks all over my face. When I met the doctor, she simply asked me to reduce my weight. People around me started calling me fat and teasing me with other demeaning words. I ignored most of it. Until one day, when a relative, looked with utter disgust and said, Oh my God! What happened to you? You used to be so pretty.' I just stood there, unable to process what just happened. Her comments kept echoing. I felt disgusted, why would anybody say that to a 19-year-old? I had never felt so ugly in life. I began to lose confidence. I started staying away from people. Until one day, it hit me. I said to myself, why do I worry so much about people who don't matter? It's hard to tell what triggered it. It just happened. I decided I would do whatever I do for my sake, and not for anybody else. And that was my motivation, I started working out.

What was your exercise regimen?

I believe fitness is 40 percent exercise and 60 percent diet. I started slowly and steadily. Since I was not used to exercising, I started with walking at a fast pace 1 hour every day. After doing this for about a month or so, I started increasing the difficulty level of workouts.

  • I started my day with running for 20-25 minutes. In the evening, I walked for an hour or did an hour of aerobics.
  • After dinner, I again did brisk walking for 30 minutes.
  • I tried taking stairs and walking whenever and wherever possible.

As easy as it seems, the main difficulty with this regime was to stay dedicated and motivated. I did this for eight months, without skipping a single day. All this, combined with a healthy diet started to show superb results. My acne started clearing up and my skin started looking more youthful. I lost 23-24 kg, and my weight now oscillates between 47-48 kg today, which is appropriate for my height (5'2") and age.

Did you follow any particular diet?

I followed a no-starvation diet. It simply means I was not allowed to starve myself ever. The first important thing is to clean your diet and chuck all the junk food. I started my day with two glasses of water. Being hydrated is crucial. I tried to include fresh juices in my diet as much as possible.

It is not about just reducing your calorie intake; it is important to know the difference between eating right and eating less. I reduced the fat and carbohydrate content in my food and increased the protein and fibre. Carbohydrates are not entirely bad, so I added apples, broccoli, asparagus, strawberries, oatmeal and whole grains in my diet. The carbs you want to avoid are the ones that turn straight into sugar, like white bread and white rice. To increase my metabolism, I ate 5-6 meals a day. I had most of my food for breakfast, a little lesser in lunch, and the least in dinner. In between, whenever I felt hungry I would eat salads, sprouts or fruits. I reduced ghee and butter and replaced it with olive oil as much as possible. I ate my meals at fixed times. This simple trick helped me a lot.

Now that you have lost weight, how do you keep yourself in shape?

I have been maintaining my weight for over two years now. I now have a much intense workout routine. I run for 30 minutes (approximately 5 km) each day. Along with it, I also do HIIT and strength exercises like planks, push-ups, crunches, lunges and squats. I follow online fitness channels like Jillian Michaels and Fitness blender. Working out is a stress-buster for me. It has increased my concentration level, helped me control my temperament, and gave me a lot of self-confidence. I have now become a health conscious person, and that is going to benefit me a lot in the long run.
