Ghee or clarified butter is an indispensable part of Indian cuisine. Though it is associated with a number of benefits, eating unhealthy amounts can add to your calorie intake for the day. According to HealthifyMe, world s first Indian nutrition tracker, a tablespoon of ghee contains as much as 84.6 calories.
Clarified butter is rich in saturated fat and having too much of it can raise the levels of bad cholesterol in your body. Well known dietician Neha Chandna suggests limiting your intake of ghee to two teaspoons per day. But if you are suffering from high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and obesity you should reduce the amount you eat as it may lead to further health complications.
However, this does not mean that you need to remove ghee from your diet completely. Often considered unhealthy, ghee actually has a number of health benefits. It contains omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids which is great for your health and helps in the secretion of gastric juices that aids in digestion[1].
