Toast and butter or jam is probably the most popular breakfast. But is it a right choice when you are trying to keep fit and shed some pounds? Bread spreads are stocked in homes as they are a quick and easy snack too. Just pick up a slice and spread some chocolate-spread or cheese on it and you are good to go. However, just a spoonful of these spreads is loaded with calories. Check out the calorie count of different bread and bread spreads here:

The breads

  • White bread: 1 slice = 68.6 cal
  • Brown bread: 1 slice = 68.3 cal
  • Multigrain bread: 1 slice = 69 cal

The spreads

  • Butter: 1 tbsp = 103.5 cal
  • Cheese: 1 slice = 73.1 cal
  • Mixed fruit jam: 1 tbsp = 65 cal
  • Pineapple jam: 1 tbsp = 45 cal
  • Orange marmalade: 1 tbsp = 44 cal
  • Peanut butter: 1 tbsp = 45 cal
  • Mayonnaise: 1 tbsp = 51.8 cal
  • Nutella: 1bsp = 78 cal
  • Tomato ketchup: 1 tbsp = 6.2 cal

You obviously have figured that butter is a complete no-no as a bread spread. Two slices of bread need about 1 tbsp of butter, which sums up to approximately 235 calories. Choose marmalades over jam as they contain fresh fruits. You can substitute butter with a thin spread of peanut butter to save on half the calories.
