It has almost been a decade that I have learned to meditate, and I can tell you that the journey has been remarkable so far. Many of my friends say that they want to meditate but always found it difficult to concentrate. But the fact is meditation is not about concentration but it is the act of doing nothing. It is about being effortless. It is okay to get disturbed by thoughts while meditating, as at the end of a meditation session, you will only feel refreshed, rejuvenated and undisturbed. I will try my best to describe how it feels like to be in a state of meditation so that you understand how effortless it is. So when I sit crossed legged with my eyes closed, here is the trail of thoughts that I get for the next 30 minutes.

First 10 minutes

Initially when I was a beginner, the first few minutes were the most challenging ones to sit at peace and focus. In fact, every time I resisted my thoughts, they kept pouring in. For example when I did not want to think about work, I kept repeating that to myself. The more I did so, the more my work ruled my mind. Sometimes, I also felt irritation, boredom and anxiety. However, the best thing to do was to let the thoughts pour in. Now I don't try to resist my thoughts. Thoughts keep passing like clouds, and they automatically disappear.

Next 10 minutes

In the next few minutes, my mind is blank. It becomes serene and calm and is at peace and free of any agitation. This is the time when I feel focused and concentrated. My mind feels integrated, introspected and open. At times, other feelings accompany it like deep feelings of pleasure, satisfaction and bliss.

Last 10 minutes

In the last few minutes, I feel unaware and not concerned about who I was and what I was. I am in a state of deep relaxation where I seem untroubled by mundane concerns and care. It is a state of concentration of high intensity. It is like there is nothing else that matters except my indefinable existence.

Sometimes, I also lose the sense of time when an hour passes like ten minutes. I have had peaceful meditation sessions as well as the rough ones. The secret is to let go and not resist your thoughts. Let them pour in and you will feel better at the end of each session.
