Whenever I do a really intense workout, I feel a little pukish. I wanted to know if my diet is responsible for it. What should I eat and do in order to avoid it?
Well, among certain fitness freaks feeling pukish is taken as a sign of accomplishment. If one feels pukish, then it is a sign that one has worked out hard enough. In fact, CrossFitters have this mascot called 'Pukie The Clown', which depicts someone who has worked so hard, that they puked. However, it is certainly not healthy and exercise should be all about sustainable growth and feeling good.
Flight lieutenant and fitness trainer Akshay Chopra has an interesting story to share with us. 'When I opened my fitness facility it took me lot of research to introduce various modalities most people haven t used before. These modalities were used in designing various high intensity training workouts. 7 out of 10 people, even with 1-2 years of gym training behind them felt pukish and dizzy within 10-20 mins of workout. The simple reason that they had no idea what a high intensity workout consists of and worse they were clueless about what consists of a pre and post workout nutrition,' said Chopra.
He adds that working out on an empty stomach is inviting danger, and must be avoided. 'Any high intensity workout like sprints, weight training, high intensity interval training, boot camp workouts etc require a quick source of fuel for energy i.e. carbohydrates. Most people have a habit of coming on empty stomach to the gym and as the intensity of the workout increases there is no fuel in the body the blood sugar level goes down and the first place where the fuel supply is cut is from the brain which is the largest guzzler of carbs in the body. This is called hypoglycemia. So the easiest thing is to have a fruit before a workout along with a black coffee which will give you both carbs for energy and caffeine for increased alertness and focus. Also carry a sports drink with you for an emergency in your bag,' he added.
