Tamarind is used in many traditional medicines as a laxative and as a natural remedy to treat intestinal worms in children. But ever wondered why imli goli or the tamarind candy is served after meals in India? Made of tamarind pulp, a bit of sugar, salt and chilli powder imli goli has a very tangy taste and is also served in many restaurants after food. But more than just being a treat to the taste buds, it has many benefits. We got nutritionist Dietician Dr Prabha Chavan from Sai Aadhar Ayurved Centre to talk about its many benefits.

Aids digestion

The pulp of tamarind is a rich source of dietary fibre that helps in preventing constipation by increasing the bulk and augmenting bowel movements. They assist in the proper secretion of digestive juices and enzymes that help the smooth running of the digestive system. Tamarind pulp can also be helpful in curing acidity. Consuming 2-3 imli golis after meals is also known to help ease gas, bloating and indigestion. Many people also eat amla, cardamom and mishri after meals. Here's how they work.

Balances blood cholesterol

The pulp of tamarind is found to be effective in reducing high blood cholesterol level which in turn protects the body from a host of cardiovascular diseases. So eating the imli golis every day after meals your can improve your heart health and even prevent cardiac complications.

Boosts immune system

Tartaric acid present in tamarind acts as a powerful antioxidant that protects the body from harmful free radicals. Ingesting imli golis after food can thus be an excellent way to give your immune system that much needed boost.

Apart from these, the potassium present in this tangy fruit helps to control blood pressure and heart rate by maintaining the normal fluid balance in the body. However, remember not to eat more than 2-3 golis after meals. All that added salt and sugar can have side effects when consumed in larger amounts.
