3 medium sized tomatoes

2 cups of water

Salt (as per taste)

Garlic – one inch sized

Ginger – 4 – 5 cloves

Onion – 1 tablespoon (finely chopped)

Black Pepper – 5-6

Mustard seeds – 1/4 th teaspoon

Urad dal – 1/4 th teaspoon

Chana dal – 1/4 th teaspoon

Cumin seeds – 1/4 th teaspoon

Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon

Curry leaves – 1-2 sprigs

Oil – 2 teaspoon

Asafoetida (Hing) – 1/8th teaspoon

Turmeric powder – 1/4th teaspoon

Red chilli powder – 1 teaspoon

Steps to prepare:

1. Blanch or steam tomatoes. Alternatively, you can even cook tomatoes in oil till they become soft and tender. Once done, cool it and blend to make a smooth puree.

2. In a mortar, add garlic, ginger, black pepper and curry leaves (half) and make a coarse paste with a pestle.

3. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When it starts to splutter, add urad dal and chana dal. Once urad dal turns light brown in colour, add onion and curry leaves.

4. Now add ginger-garlic and black pepper paste and allow it to cook for a minute or two. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder and hing. Mix all the ingredients properly.

5. Add tomato puree and salt. Mix and add water. Bring it to a boil and simmer it for 10 – 15 minutes. Garnish it with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice. Also read about black pepper and garlic rasam recipe.
