Who doesn’t love tomato ketchup! Tomato ketchup is the perfect accompaniment to french fries, samosas, aloo tikkis, cutlets, hot dogs, sandwiches, kothimbir wadis and so many other yummy finger foods and appetizers and snacks. It is a well known fact that store-bought tomato ketchup is loaded with preservatives, artificial colours, food adulterants and generally have excess salt, sugar and other chemicals to make it tastier and last longer. If you are on a healthy eating, weight loss mission, even a small serving of store-bought ketchup can ruin your diet plans. Tomato ketchup is also extremely popular with kids and is generally their go-to option for making healthy sabzis or khichdis less bland. This is a great concern for many parents. Celebrity chef Amrita Raichand, host of the popular TV cooking show Mummy Ka Magic and YouTube channel, Being Amrita: Chef & Beyond, is one such mom. To deal with this problem, Amrita has come up with her recipe of homemade tomato ketchup that tastes just as delicious as store-bought ones. 1 cup boiled pumpkin puree

1 cup fresh tomato puree ( don’t boil or blanch the tomatoes)

200 gms packaged tomato puree

1/3 cup sugar (you can put more or less depending on the sourness or sweetness of the tomatoes )

2 teaspoons vinegar

A pinch of salt or to taste

Peppercorns 8

Cloves 4 to 6

Chilli flakes 1 generous pinch (optional) ( if you want it to be spicier, you can add more)

Onion powder 4 tsp

Garlic powder 1/2 tsp

Method –

Caramelise the sugar in a thick bottomed steel pan.

Make the pumpkin puree with peeled pumpkin and a little water in a pressure cooker. Puree it in a blender when cooked.

Cook the pumpkin puree and tomato puree in a deep pan till it thickens.

Add the caramel, vinegar and other seasonings and spices and about a cup of water. Continue to cook till it thickens. It may take about 45 minutes.

Strain through a fine strainer.
