Mint or Pudina is one of the most extensively used culinary herbs that add flavor and taste to your dishes. It is an indispensable part of most of the Indian cuisines. Did you know that they can help treat your upset stomach too?

Pudina is loaded with phytonutrients and antioxidants that are found to work wonders for your digestion. Menthol present in this herb activates the secretion of bile salts and acids into the digestive tract. It also acts on the smooth muscles of the stomach and aids in reducing the gas caused due to indigestion. Activation of the smooth muscles by menthol hastens the overall process of digestion and relieves problems caused due to undigested food.

It is also found that this herb relieves acidity, gets rid of flatulence and soothe stomach cramps that are caused as a result of indigestion. Ayurvedic practitioners use mint to treat patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Tips to include mint in your diet

  • Crush a handful of fresh mint leaves and add to a glass of water. Drink this water on a daily basis for almost 15 days to observe effective results.
  • Prepare pudina tea by adding few mint leaves to boiling water and straining it. This helps in providing quick relief from painful stomach and indigestion.
  • Add mint to every dish you prepare especially in salads and yoghurt.
