Health benefits of Yam

Originating from West Africa, this vegetable has often been associated with a lot of rituals and beliefs, especially in the African region. It is often used while cooking meals and is one of the most consumed foods in countries like India, Pacific Islands and West Indies.

Yams come in 200 different types. They have different colours and species. Even though they have slight resemblance to sweet potatoes, they are nothing like them. Yams are great for health and can be added to a nutritional diet. Here are some of the many benefits it has to offer.

Prevents cardiovascular disease

Yams are very low in fat. Not more than 0.25 grams a cup, this vegetable is healthy and tends to reduce your fat consumption overall. Not only that, yams protect the cell membranes of your body. They allow your body to absorb all fat soluble vitamins which ultimately prevent any cardiovascular disease. In that way, yam is not just ideal for weight loss but also a healthy lifestyle.

Protects from heart disease
