Cyclist appThe Garmin Edge 1000 cycling computer combines turn-by-turn navigation and smartphone connectivity with training and competition. So as well as being able to plan routes based on points of interest, the steepness of inclines or the total amount of miles or kilometers its user is prepared to pedal, there are also race and challenge modes.

A cyclist can race against him- or herself by re-riding existing routes or compete with others. The unit is also compatible with Garmin's ANT+ sensors so it can track things like heart rate and riding style -- how much power is being exerted and left/right balance in sprints.

And when connected to these sensors, the Edge 1000 can also develop and track training programs and help riders meet training goals. But for those who want to take it easy, the system works like an in-car system and, as well as showing the route ahead, thanks to Bluetooth connectivity it can display incoming calls and messages from a tethered smartphone and, of course, plug into social media to share achievements. The unit has a 3-inch full-color glove-friendly touchscreen display but can also be operated via an optional ruggedized remote control unit that can be fitted to a bike's handlebars. The Edge 1000 will go on sale this spring with a suggested retail price of $599.99 or for $699.99 with the optional sensors bundled as a complete package.
