Baby corn has made a place for itself in the Indian cuisine quicker than other exotic vegetables. However, some still consider it a fancy vegetable that can be used as a topping or as an add-on ingredient in the main course. Most of us are ignorant about the health benefits of baby corn, says Dr Aastha Sharma Dietitian at Nayati Hospital, Mathura. Not only is it a rich source of fiber but also of Vitamin A, phosphorus, magnesium and iron. Due to this, it is beneficial in various medical conditions.
Controls cholesterol: Baby corn is rich in vitamin C, carotenoids and bioflavonoids that keep your heart healthy by controlling the cholesterol levels and increasing blood flow.
Prevents anaemia: Baby corn contains a good amount of iron. This can prevent iron deficiencies like anaemia.
Improves digestion: It is high in fiber therefore, it helps to relieve constipation. A study also recommends its use in patients with colon cancer says, Dr Sharma.
Reduces hypertension: Due to the presence of phenols, it helps control high blood pressure.
Essential during pregnancy: Baby corn is an excellent source of folic acid and good for increasing the baby's weight. Constipation is a common complaint during pregnancy, hence adding baby corn to the diet is healthy for pregnant ladies.
Antioxidant rich: Baby corn is a rich source of antioxidants which fight cancer-causing free radicals and thus reduce risk of cancer.
Control diabetes: For individuals suffering from NIDDM (Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus), baby corn is beneficial due to its low glycaemic index as compared to regular corn.
Improves eye sight: Rich sources of vitamin A help to maintain good vision and baby corn is a good source. You can also try these home remedies to improve eyesight.
