5. Ayurvedic detox diet
Ayurvedic detoxification is not just through diet; it is a much more elaborate process spread out over 45 days, and involves a disciplined routine that includes diet, yoga, exercise, and even massage. This complete detoxification and cleansing treatment is called Panchakarma, a series of five therapies Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Basti and Raktamoskshana. Read about it in detail in Ayurvedic detox diet a step-by-step guide to cleanse your body
The Ayurvedic detox diet is all about resetting the digestive fire Agni, allowing it to rest and strengthen. Even research shows that ayurvedic detox procedure are effective in reducing fat-soluble toxins. [6]
So here s a simple ayurvedic detox diet plan which you need to follow for a week.
Eat three meals a day. Snacks in between is a strict no-no.
Cooked prunes and figs make for an ideal detox breakfast. Stewed apple or pear also work well. Drink chai (Indian tea with spices) or green leafy vegetable juice in the morning.
For all seven days consume khichri made with mung dal (green gram), rice, vegetables, and ghee, for your other two meals. You may add spices to spice it up. Keep changing the choice of vegetables every day in your khichri for variety. Lassi (yogurt blended with water and digestive spices) is a great lunchtime beverage.
Sip hot water every half hour or one hour throughout the day. Hot water helps dissolve the toxins from your system. It helps flush the lymphatic system and helps heal and repair the digestive system.
Take two tablets of Triphala before bedtime. Triphala is a herbal formulation consisting of equal parts of seedless fruits of Amla [Indian gooseberry] (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki [belleric myrobalan] (Terminalia bellirica), and Haritaki [chebulic myrobalan] (Terminalia chebula). You can also take Triphala powder with 2-3 teaspoonful of warm water, ghee, or honey.
6.Detox massage therapy
Another way you can detox is by kick starting your body s own natural cleansing processes through massage therapy. When circulatory systems become sluggish, toxins accumulate in the body. Applying rhythmic pressure to the muscles and tissues during massage therapy, stimulates your blood circulatory system and lymphatic system. Toxins are released and these systems start functioning better.
Do the massages yourself or get them done by a certified masseur (parlours, massage centres). If you are doing it yourself, try the Ayurvedic Abhayanga.
Choose a herbal massage oil or sesame oil (look for cold-pressed, organic sesame oil), or ashwagandha (winter cherry) oil.
Warm the oil by holding the container under running hot water for a few minutes.
Then dip your fingertips into the warm oil, and apply it lightly all over your body.
Wait for a couple of minutes to allow the body to absorb the oil.
Using your palm and fingers, massage the entire body evenly.
Use circulatory motions for rounded areas such as abdomen, head and joints; and, straight strokes for limbs. Do not massage hard on sensitive areas such as heart or abdomen.
Massage for about 15 to 20 minutes, three-four times a week.
After the massage relax for about 15 minutes. Follow it up with a warm bath.
7. Yoga for detoxification
Yoga experts claim that certain yoga poses help the body to cleanse and detoxify. The yoga pose, Ardhamatsyendrasan, is one of them.
Here s how you do it -
Sit with legs stretched straight in front of you; feet together; spine erect.
Bend the left leg and place the heel of the left foot beside the right hip.
Position the right leg next to the left knee.
Place the left arm on the right knee, touching the right foot.
Position the right hand behind you.
Twist the waist, shoulders and neck to the right and look over the right shoulder.
Gently take in a long breath, and then slowly breathe out.
Breathing out, undo the pose starting by releasing the right hand first release the waist, then the chest, the neck, and sit up.
Relax for a few moments.
Repeat the steps with your right leg now.
Relax.
Choose a detox plan that you are comfortable with
A warning though! Research supports the role of medical nutrition in the prevention and treatment of disease, inflammation, allergies, and asthma, as well as protecting against and treating environmental exposures. For example, some fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants and phytonutrients enhance detoxification. However, most diet or other approaches to detoxification are not evidence-based, or are non-standardised and often controversial. [7]
Any detox plan will at least help you shed the flab you gained during the festivities, and keep you looking good.
