While you may love the flavour and taste of tomato in your food, storing tomato may still be a challenge for you. It is no sooner after you have bought the tomatoes from the market you will find that tomatoes have begun to rot. But that doesn t mean that you will stop buying tomatoes altogether. Nutritionist Padma Syal tells you how exactly you should be storing your favourite tomatoes to increase their shelf life.
You should ideally store the tomatoes at room temperature to preserve their flavour and texture. However, how you store the tomatoes also depends a lot on how ripe they are.
Storing unripe tomatoes
If the tomatoes are green and unripe, you should ideally store them in a paper bag or a cardboard box with their stems side down. Make sure that you place them in a cool area until they are red in colour. These are the toxic chemicals used to make veggies look fresh.
Storing perfectly ripe tomatoes
If you have bought perfectly ripe tomatoes, store them at room temperature away from the sunlight. Store them with their stem side up and make sure that the tomoatoes do not touch one another. Also, ensure that you eat the tomatoes within a few days as ripe tomatoes cannot be stored for too long.
Storing overripe tomatoes
And if you have got overripe tomatoes that are very fleshy and soft to touch it is best that you store them in a fridge. The cold temperature in the fridge will prevent the tomatoes from ripening even more. Placing the overripe tomatoes in the fridge will increase their shelf life by three days. But before you cook the tomatoes, make sure that you take them out of the fridge and allow them to come to room temperature to retain the flavour that was lost during refrigeration. Here are 5 tips to keep your fridge well organised.
