Preventing digestive issues in summer season: There are many kinds of digestion problems seen in the summer months, and among them are bloating, indigestion, and general discomfort. Nidhi Nahata, a lifestyle coach, and founder of Justbe by Nidhi Nahata -- a plant-based vegetarian restaurant -- says that instead of relying on pills and other medications, it is important to improve the diet and heal the body from within. According to the expert, one must slow down, simplify their diet, and eat in a way that helps the body feel light, cool, and aligned. After all, it is not about following trends, but about understanding how the gut communicates with us. Read on to know about the powerful summer-friendly foods that can harmonise the gut, as listed by the expert.
Coconut Water
According to the lifestyle coach, coconut water has electrolytes that can calm the digestive fire, especially when one suffers from acidity or bloating that can make them restless. Unlike aerated drinks that can aggravate the problem, coconut water quietly restores balance. Who should avoid it? Those with kidney issues or those who are on low-potassium diets.
Soaked Sabja Seeds
Sabja seeds look like tiny pearls that are summer's most underrated gift, Nahata says. When soaked, they become 'mucilaginous', meaning, they act as a natural coolant and a mild laxative. They ease constipation and reduce heat-induced bloating. Pro tip: Add them to lime water with mint for a soothing pre-meal drink.
Steamed Ash Gourd
Considered to be extremely healthy as per Ayurveda, ash gourd cools down the system. The expert says that it is 96 per cent water and rich in soluble fibre, which can help to cleanse the gut. "When digestion feels like a pressure cooker, an ash gourd is your reset button." Caution: People with sinus issues must not consume too much of it, as it can increase mucus.
Fennel Seeds
Chewing fennel seeds after meals can relax the gut muscles, prevent gas build-up, and freshen the breath. A cup of fennel tea in the evening soothes an irritated stomach.
Raw Papaya
Raw papaya is rich in the natural enzyme papain that aids digestion. It helps break down proteins that might otherwise linger too long in the gut, causing bloating or discomfort. It is especially helpful after a heavy or late summer meal, says the health expert. Tip: Lightly steam or grate the papaya in salads with lime and rock salt.

Mint Leaves
Mint leaves are more than just garnish. They activate the salivary glands, which is the first step in the digestion process. Also, they can relax the stomach lining and reduce gas. In summer, one can combine mint with coriander and lemon to make a gut-friendly chutney.
Cooked Bottle Gourd (Lauki)
In summer, the gut craves comfort. Bottle gourd, when steamed or cooked with cumin, offers a feeling of warmth. It is easy to digest, and can help in reducing inflammation. It also hydrates the body from within.
