Should you put milk in your green tea or black tea?

Tea has a lot of health benefits. But by adding milk, you won't be able to reap its benefits.

How do you like your tea? If you are an Indian, most likely you d say With sugar, milk and a huge chunk of ginger; and in that order! We Indians don t like tea made any other way. No matter where you go, the basic ingredients may stay the same albeit in varying measurements. But milk and sugar are the two constants. Take one ingredient out, and you ruin someone s day along with their cuppa. Matcha green tea frappes and chai lattes may come and go, for us Indians, chai is always forever. Coffee lovers may scoff when I say that it is not just a beverage, but an emotion! So I am sure I d be stepping on a lot of toes when I say it s time we banished the milk from the chai. Well, studies say so! Also Read - Caffeine overdose to dehydration: Drinking too much green tea can be seriously harmful

Even when green tea first hit the markets, we were intrigued by its distinct green hue and its supposed wealth of health benefits. But we were treading in an unfamiliar territory trying to figure out what s the best way to serve it. Though popularly it is served lightly steeped in hot water with a dash of honey and lemon, there are places where it is also served with a generous splash of milk. Black or green, so what s wrong in serving milk with tea? For starters, it s got phenols and polyphenols, a group of plant-based molecules with a host of health benefits. Black tea, for example, improves cardiovascular health by relaxing the arteries. These heart-protecting nutrients also have antioxidant effects, and they help in regulating enzyme function and stimulating cell receptors. And milk contains the protein casein with interacts with the coloured tea polyphenols in the tea and binds with them. These mutually incompatible ingredients end up altering the heart-protecting function of phenols and polyphenols profoundly. So, to put things simply, milk ruins tea! All its great health benefits are wasted when the tea is served with milk. [1]

But the taste of plain black tea or green tea is not palatable to many. So to reap the benefits of this beverage, add complementary ingredients like honey or lemon to it instead and be sure to give that chai latte a miss when you visit the cafe.
