Hydration is one of the key factors for a healthy life. Sadly, according to reports, most people are not drinking enough fluids as they should, making at least 75% of Americans dehydrated.
An adult must consume at least 12 to 15 cups of water to help the organs function normally. And to be specific for women, at least 2.5 to 3 L are required, whereas men should drink a minimum of 3.5 to 4 L each day. While the quantity of water matters, researchers say that the temperature is also important for certain health benefits.
Although there is very little scientific research in this area, many believe that drinking hot water on an empty stomach daily in the morning between the temperatures of 54 and 71 C can help improve digestion, relieve congestion, and promote relaxation compared to drinking cold water.
Researchers recommend that for an extra boost, you may try eating vitamin C, such as lemon juice in hot water, to reap the benefits of both the natural sources. Ensure to avoid drinking hot water above the recommended temperature, as it can burn or scale your tongue.
A 2019 study shows that drinking enough water can affect your central nervous system function. Therefore, no matter if it is cold or hot water, drinking enough fluid may improve your central nervous system function, which can also lift your mood.
Warm water, on the other hand, is generally below 43 C. The temperature of warm water is not typically too harsh for your skin or your mouth to consume. In Ayurveda, warm water is purely magic as it aids in metabolism, detoxification and even mental alertness. Experts suggest that people who have sinus congestion can benefit from drinking warm water, as it could loosen mucus and dilate the nasal passage to facilitate easier breathing.
At this point, it's clear that both hot water and warm water offer health benefits. However, research suggests that if you are seeking better digestion, then drinking hot water with a squeeze of lemon can be beneficial for you in the long run. On the other hand, when it comes to healthy skin and hair, scientists recommend warm water, as it is gentle on the skin and hair without drying them too much.
