Why do we feel exhausted after lunch? Most Indians feel a little bit of lethargy kick in, after they have consumed a particularly-heavy meal for lunch. Post-lunch/post-meal exhaustion, though common, is not normal and can be prevented. According to nutritionist Bhakti Arora Kapoor, post-lunch fatigue or sleepiness is not a normal part of your day. "Your body's energy levels should be steady, not plummeting after a meal. If you are hitting that afternoon slump hard, it could be a sign that your lunch is not giving you the fuel you need," she stated, adding that one has to start by evaluating their lunch choices. Are they loading up on refined carbs and sugars? "Opt instead for balanced meals rich in lean proteins, healthy fats, and fibre-packed veggies. These nutrients provide sustained energy and keep you feeling fuller for longer," the expert stated in an Instagram post.
The nutritionist went on to say that feeling sluggish in the afternoon, particularly on a work day, can be damaging for people who have deadlines to meet. This energy drain can wreak havoc on their creativity and productivity, and they may depend on sugary snacks and caffeinated drinks to stay awake. So, what can be done about it?
The nutritionist said it is important to keep in mind the following few things.
It is important to balance blood sugar levels in the body. When blood sugar is dysregulated, you are likely to experience energy dips, sugar cravings and anxiety. It also impacts hormonal health.
How To Balance Blood Sugar Levels?
Start your day with a high-protein breakfast, and increase your protein intake.
Eat more fibre-rich foods.
Stop drinking coffee on an empty stomach.
Lower your cortisol levels.
Move more, especially after having a meal. Walk for 10 minutes.
Pair foods appropriately and stay hydrated.
Balance your mineral levels.
Focus on getting a good-quality sleep.
Consider consuming a high-quality magnesium supplement.
Other Things To Keep In Mind
The expert said that among the other things that can provide relief from post-meal sluggishness is portion control. Be mindful of what you put on your plate, and its quantity. Also, adhering to meal timing is important, as eating too much or too close to a work-related task in the afternoon can leave you feeling sluggish, and you may struggle to meet your deadlines. Make sure you drink plenty of water as dehydration can steal your energy.
