When you are looking for a protein source, meat could be one of your top choices. However, certain cuts of meat have so much saturated fat and cholesterol that it outweighs its nutritional benefits. The high-fat content in meat has long been associated with diabetes and heart disease. To prevent these possible side effects of meat, it would be best to opt for lean cuts of meat. Lean cuts are the cuts of meat that are trimmed to remove visible fats.

Switching to lean cuts can provide you with plenty of iron that is vital for the production of haemoglobin in red blood cells. Additionally, a diet rich in lean meat can provide you with adequate protein, supplying each of the essential amino acids to support your immune system. Lean cuts have a low glycemic index, so they won t cause any spike in your blood sugar levels. If you are looking to lose weight, lean meat could be best for you as it will help gain muscle and maintain a lean structure.

Tips:

  • Consume freshly prepared meat because it is not smoked or salted like processed meats.
  • Cooking meat for a long time releases carcinogenic substances like heterocyclic amines. Marinating the meat before cooking is a good way to cut down this risk.
  • If you are grilling the lean cuts, remove the charred part of meat or fish as it has been shown to increase the risk of cancer [1].
