If you are a vegan or are intolerant to lactose, you must have surely come across coconut milk as a substitute for dairy, especially in dishes. Many Indian dishes and curries also use coconut milk as a base. However, the high fat content in the milk may make you think twice before using it and wonder how healthy this beverage is. The fact is if consumed in moderation, you can benefit from coconut milk in a number of ways.
Aids in weight loss
Coconut milk may contain high levels of saturated fat, but the fats present are medium chained fatty acids which are not stored in your body as fats. This medium chained fatty acids can instead stimulate your metabolism and aid in weight loss. Additionally, coconut milk can make you feel full for longer and satiate the brain receptors which control your appetite.

Drinking coconut milk may significantly lower the risk of heart disease. The fatty acids in coconut milk may kill the bacteria that cause plaque formation in the arteries which may lead to heart disease. According to Ceylon Medical Journal, coconut milk does not contain trans fatty acids, are gluten-free, loaded with high amounts of dietary fibre, all of which can promote cardiovascular health. Apart from this, coconut milk will also help regulate the cholesterol levels in your body which can prevent your arteries from damage.

Your immune system can benefit a lot from the antimicrobial properties of coconut milk. The lauric acid present in coconut milk is an antibacterial and antiviral substance which can eradicate the disease-causing organisms in the body. To add to that, it also contains vitamin C, which can keep the immune system working better.
Regulates blood sugar levels
Coconut milk can be a healthy choice if you are suffering from diabetes as the high amounts of manganese in it can regulate your blood sugar levels. Manganese can slow down the movement of food through the intestines into your stomach which can prevent the rapid spike in blood sugar levels in your body. It also gives you the much needed omega-6 fatty acids you require to control your blood glucose levels.
Slows down the process of ageing
Packed with nutrients such as vitamin C, E and K, consuming coconut milk may help condition and fortify your skin and hair. Also, the high amount of copper in the milk can improve the elasticity of the skin preventing wrinkles and sagging of the skin. Additionally, the high fatty acid in it may serve as a natural moisturiser for the skin.
How to consume?
Preparing coconut milk at home is fairly simple. All you need to do is grate coconut in hot water, skim off the cream and strain the remaining liquid to extract the milk. You can also purchase the milk from superstores and megamarkets.
When it comes to its portion sizes, it s best if you limit your intake to 2 cups a day. Blending coconut milk with bananas can be an excellent cold treat on a warm day. It can also be used as a base for soups and many curry dishes.
