Most of us may think that yoga is a combination of stretching and breathing postures, but yoga is much more than what meets the eye. Yoga mudra is a lesser known, more subtle branch of yoga which has many benefits for mind and body. Mudras are simple hand gestures that are performed on its own or in combination with the yogic breathing techniques. Chin mudra is one of the most common hand gestures in yoga and meditation.

Chin mudra can benefit you in many ways:

  • Sitting in chin mudra can help improve your focus and concentration and hence it can be ideal to improve your productivity at work.
  • Chin mudra is excellent to help you sleep and also improve your sleep pattern.
  • It is also a good gesture to alleviate lower back pain.
  • It helps release stress and tension from the body. It will help clear the mind and free you from unwanted thoughts.

Steps to perform:

  • Sit in sukhasana or the easy pose. Now place your hands on your thighs such that your palms are facing towards the ceiling. Ensure that you are keeping your spine erect.
  • Now bend your index finger such that it touches the tip of your thumb. Do not exert any pressure and make sure that your index finger is only slightly touching your thumb. Make sure the other three fingers of your hand remain extended. Do this with both your hands.
  • Keep breathing deeply and observe the flow of your breath.
  • Hold this position for 2-3 minutes and relax in sukhasana.

You can perform this mudra any time of the day.
