I always thought that children's books, especially the ones meant for babies and pre-schoolers, were cute, colourful and elementary -- just that. Barring the encyclopedias and general knowledge books, what would a children's book have to offer, right? It was only after I became a mother and started reading books to my baby that I realised that children's books are real gems! Full of meaningful life lessons, some children's books are to be treasured, by people of all ages. And I am not talking about Harry Potter and Aestrix, but books by children's authors like Julia Donaldson, Dr Seuss, Roald Dahl! Like all book lovers, its my duty to share this list of children's books that all adults must read. So, here goes:
1. Oh, The Places You'll Go: Let me state this beforehand, I am in LOVE with this Dr Seuss book. It is the most beautiful, uplifting, powerful book I have ever read. While it is meant for kids aged 3-6, it will speak to readers across all ages, especially adults aged 25-35. My favourite line from the book is 'You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose'. It speaks about the things you will do in life, the happiness and sadness you will face and how you are capable of overcoming the obstacles. It is a lovely book you must, must have.
2. Harold And The Purple Crayon: What is the simplest way to realise that you are the creator of your life? This book. It is about how a little boy, Harold, wants a moon, so he draws it. Then he draws a path, a forest, a dragon, and a lot of other things. Finally he draws himself a window from which he can see the moon, a bed, pillow and blanket, and falls asleep peacefully. The take home lesson here is that you design your own life and can modify it the way you want.
3. How To Catch A Star: Most children's books aim at teaching life morals to kids, and these morals are definitely not age restricted. How to catch a star is a book that teaches hope, faith and perseverance. It is about a little boy who loves stars and wants to have one, and gets his star.
4. Charlie And The Great Glass Elevator: Not all children's books are about teaching life lessons, some are creative, engaging and out of this world too. This book is literally out of this book, as it is set in outer space. A sequel to Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (another great book), this book will take you by surprise and will probably be the most creative one you will have read in a long time.
