I am a 35-year-old woman and weigh 75 kg. I was keen on joining a yoga class but my friends tell me that I need to lose weight first. Is it true? Do I need to lose weight before I begin with yoga?

It is true that you will find some yoga poses more challenging because of your weight and the extra weight will also put pressure on your joints. But, you don t need to lose weight before you start practising yoga, says well-known yoga expert Sunaina Rekhi. In fact, yoga can be an answer if you are trying to slim down. Yoga also makes you more flexible and fitter and, therefore, enables you to do more physical activity so that you lose more weight. Yoga offers pain relief that will allow you to perform other types of workout like cardio and strength training like a pro.

Yoga can be an excellent way to help you burn calories. With yoga, you will be able to detoxify your body and lose weight in the process. It stimulates and tones the organs and allows them to work optimally. Opt for fast-paced yoga styles like power, vinyasa and ashtanga yoga rather than slow-paced styles like Iyengar and Kripalu. Practising these yoga forms, you will stretch nd tone your muscles, improve your metabolism and thus burn more calories. Aside from torching your calories, these yoga styles will strengthen your muscles and help you focus better. You must try this 10 yoga-pose routine for a flat tummy.
