The firefly pose or Titibhasana is an intermediate level yoga pose that requires core strength. Even though it looks like an arm balancing pose, the best way to master it is with a strong core that makes lifting the body and balancing it on your arms easy. Yoga expert Mahua Deb,trainer, Defence Welfare Association and at Vishakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) tells you how to perform this asana correctly and its benefits:

Steps:

  • Stand with feet slightly less distant than the shoulders.
  • Squat and bring the palms beside the feet and torso in between the knees.
  • Lean forward while taking the bottom up, the back of each knee should be as far up towards the shoulders as possible.
  • Now slowly shifting the head and torso up and taking bottom down, take the feet off the ground.
  • Lift yourself off the ground and straightening your legs. The important thing is not the straightness of the legs, the important thing is to balance oneself above the ground on the arms and holding the posture for as long as possible.
  • Engage your stomach muscles in bearing the weight of your body, draw the chest inward.
  • Release by slowly bringing the legs down and getting back to starting squat position.

Benefits:

  • Stretches the inner groin, back and torso.
  • Helps in toning and strengthening of shoulders, arms and wrist.
  • Reduces belly fat and tones the abdomen.

If you are suffering from back, shoulder or wrist injury, you must avoid performing this pose.
