Many people suffer from hip pain and stiffness, regardless of age and gender. It happens because of various reasons, but primarily, it is an accompaniment of age. The wear and tear on joints and muscles as we age can cause some amount of stiffness and pain in the hips. Other factors include overuse or repetitive strain by doing activities like running, cycling, or repetitive lifting, slouching or slumping, falls, sports injuries, or car accidents, prolonged sitting or inactivity, medical conditions like diabetes, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis, or even osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or psoriatic arthritis. Whatever may be the reason, it is important to get yourselves checked, especially if you are of a certain age, and are dealing with a medical condition.

In case you are someone who assumes a poor posture at work, or generally leads a sedentary lifestyle, it is important to get active and make a few changes so as to rid yourself of stiffness and pain in hips. Actor Bhagyashree, who is a fitness enthusiast and also a nutritionist, recently demonstrated some exercises on her Instagram account, claiming that they can provide relief from stiffness in the hips. She called them diamond exercises, because of the shape they make with the legs.

According to the 55-year-old, who loves to exercise and stay active, 10 reps of each exercise will help 'mobilise your hip joint and make your movements pain-free'. "These can easily be done within the comfort of your home. Note that all of them need to be done slowly and regularly. With consistency you will see the difference. Do try them," she mentioned.

Exercises To Improve Hip Mobility

  1. In the first exercise, Bhagyashree suggested lying down on the floor and raising the legs -- with the knees kept together and the feet apart, followed by placing the feet together and knees apart.
  2. After this, you can place one leg on the floor while bending it at the knee. Raise one leg to the ceiling and then bring it down to touch the knees, as demonstrated in the video. Repeat it with the other leg.
  3. Next, you must raise both legs in the air and point them towards the ceiling. Then make sure they are apart. Place the feet together to form a diamond shape, and then return to the original position.
  4. After this, you can lie on your side and touch the knees by placing them together. Then, open your knees by touching your toes to assume the diamond shape. Repeat this on the other side.
