I have recently started going to the gym. I am wondering if the treadmill or cross trainer shows the exact calories burnt. Are gym monitors reliable? Do they show the correct readings? Please advise.

Machines are set in accordance to global standards. If two people with different body types were to perform the same exercise (cardio vascular) in the same way, keeping other factors constant, their bodies would respond in the same manner irrespective of the body structure. For e.g.: if two people were running at the speed of 10 kmph for 5 minutes, the calories burnt would be the same. The heartbeat may differ but the calories burnt will stay the same and will show on the gym monitor accordingly. Read: 10 ways your burn more calories doing everyday activities.
