The bright green colour of this wholesome snack appeals to all our good senses! The technique of steaming instead of frying make this a low-calorie evening snack. There are only 13 calories per dumpling. So, 5-6 dumplings with green chutney make a snack amounting to only 100 calories! Spinach is rich in essential vitamins like folic acid and vitamin A.

Makes 10 dumplings

Ingredients

Spinach (palak) chopped 1 1/2 cups finely

Ginger-green chilli paste 1 tsp

Bengal gram flour (besan) 2 tbsp

Whole wheat flour (gehun ka atta) 1 1/2 tbsp

Fresh low-fat curds (optional) 2 tsp

Asafoetida (hing)

Sugar

Oil 1 tsp

Oil for greasing 1/4 tsp

Salt to taste

For Serving

Green chutney 3 tbsp

Sweet and sour sauce 3 tbsp

Method

  1. Combine all the ingredients together in a bowl and mix well.
  2. Divide the mixture into 10 equal portions and shape each portion into a flat round ball.
  3. Arrange the dumpling on a greased 150 mm. (6") diameter plate (thaali) and steam in a steamer for 7 to 8 minutes till they are cooked. Serve hot with green chutney and sweet and sour sauce.
