Age should never be a barrier to achieving anything in life, especially if the goal is to live a healthy life. Most seniors believe that exercising and strength training is not something they can start doing after they have crossed a particular age. But the truth is exercise not only helps you stay active but also makes you feel younger.
Studies relate regular physical activity to lowered risk for a variety of conditions including Alzheimer's and dementia, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure and obesity. Even if you're suffering from lifestyle disorders like diabetes and hypertension you can still exercise. Here are some simple exercises you can start with.
Walking: It's the simplest yet the most effective exercise for older adults. Brisk walking is an aerobic activity that improves circulation and makes your lungs stronger. Walking for just 30minutes a day can burn off calories, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, improve joint movement, improve heart health and boost your overall energy levels.
Swimming: Whether you perceive it as a hobby or as a challenge, swimming can be a good low-impact exercise for you. It improves endurance and flexibility and also relieves stress on the bones and joints. Another added advantage of swimming is that it carries a lower risk of injury compared to other endurance exercises.
Stretching: Muscles and joints will eventually start losing their function as you get old. But without exercise, your condition is likely to worsen. If you don't stay active your muscles stiffness will increase, making you feel weak. Gentle stretching exercises will improve your flexibility as well. According to the National Institute on Aging regularly stretching of the neck, shoulders, upper arms, etc., can help you stay active. Here are some stretching exercises you can try
Household chores: With Indian women, the problem is that they are always busy with household work, which is why they keep complaining about lack of time for exercise. But doing household work like washing dishes, cleaning, walking to the grocery shop and cooking can help you in a long way to lose weight and stay fit.
