Nobody who has achieved success will tell you that it has come to them easily. Meet 21-year-old Kashish Haidri who worked hard to lose weight and in the process became a Zumba trainer. She dropped 12 kg in 6 months and weighed an even 60 kg on the scale. At 5 feet 6 inches, she looks lean and toned today. Was it only Zumba that did the trick? Let us look at her weight loss journey.

What motivated you to lose weight?

My weight started creeping up when I was in college. I was not that heavy, but like any other teenager I wanted a sleek and slender look. Zumba was very popular and promised weight loss. I took to dancing and practised it for six months continuously until I hurt my back. I developed slipped disc because of doing squats the wrong way. I rested for two months and after that I was more determined than ever to get in shape. I was driven to take it up professionally because I missed Zumba more than anything when I was on bed rest. So eventually became a licensed Zumba fitness instructor. Calculate how much weight you can lose in a month here.

When did you start losing weight?

Initially, I did not lose too much weight because I would eat out, but once I did the training I started eating clean, and so could see visible results. I believe it is the frequency and intensity of my workout that helped me lose weight faster. Before the injury, I would attend one hour Zumba class three times a week. But once I took up the training, I had to learn choreography so I worked hard each day. I got trained while I was studying and even during my exams I would go for Zumba class twice a day as it was a stress buster for me. Zumba helped me build stamina and flexibility. Now I practice it for an hour every day.

Did you follow any particular diet?

I eat every two hours in small portions. My diet is mainly composed of salad and green vegetables. When it comes to carbs, I swear by bhakri and totally avoid wheat and maida. I avoid any junk or processed foods. I have also cut down on my consumption of sweets. I make sure that I drink a lot of water at regular intervals.

Now that you have lost weight, how do you keep yourself in shape?

I stay slim by teaching Zumba and now I am into weight training too. I realised how important it was to build muscles along with burning fat. I am also looking to get a certification in weight training.

So is Zumba a way of life now or do you only dance to stay slim?

It not only benefitted me physically, but also emotionally. I was very moody and would get angry easily. Zumba helped me stay calm. I believe I can deal with tough decisions better only because I practice Zumba. It changed me as a person and gave me the opportunity to discover my inner self.

Kashish is a Zumba instructor for nine months now and trains in several gyms and studios in Nerul and Vashi.
