World Lung Day reminds us that people usually pay no attention to the lungs, and when breathing happens to be a challenge, they notice it. The fact is that, before most patients complain of chronic cough, shortness of breath, or fatigue, the disease will have caused a considerable degree of lung damage. The lungs do not regenerate as well as some organs, and this means that damage may be caused at an early stage before the person may notice it. Let us know in detail.
Speaking with Dr Manav Manchanda, Director & Head Respiratory, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, Asian Hospital, he said, "Environmental pollution has become one of the largest contributors to the damage of the lungs in the present day. In places that have perennial poor air quality, such as Delhi, people are breathing particulate matter on a daily basis. These microparticles enter the airways deep into the lungs and provoke inflammation, which gradually worsens the work of the lungs. What is troubling is the fact that young, otherwise healthy people are already presenting with reduced lung capacity."
"Another significant offender is smoking, active and passive. Each puff of tobacco smoke brings in thousands of toxic chemicals that scar the lungs and eliminate alveoli, which are tiny sacs where oxygen is exchanged. By the time the patient notices the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema, permanent damage to the lungs has already taken place in most of the patients," the doctor added.
Another trend that is on the increase is occupational lung diseases in people who are exposed to dust, chemicals or poisonous fumes. The conditions are usually silent over years, and then they manifest in the form of chronic breathing challenges. To this lifestyle, add inappropriate nutrition and lack of exercise, which weaken the immunity and general lung strength, and the image is even more frightening.
You see, you do not know how much of the damage to your lungs has already been inflicted. Some of the warning signs include persistent cough, dyspnea, loss of energy, tight feelings in the chest together with unrestrained breathing while performing normal tasks. However, the majority of them do not present any of the symptoms until the condition becomes acute. This is why they are to be subjected to preventive health check-ups; i.e., spirometry (checking of lungs) and chest x-rays, especially those who are in a more risky state due to the pollution, smoking, or employment-related perceptions.
This is an excellent development since one can always start taking care of their lungs.Cessation of smoking, wearing of protective masks within polluted areas, making sure that the air is of good quality within the household, performing exercises on breathing regularly, etc, can go a long way in keeping the lungs quite healthy. There are also incidences of influenza and pneumoniae vaccine against the infections, which might result in extra damage to lungs, which are already very weak.
On this World Lung Day 2025, do not wait until it shows up touching your chest before you start thinking about lung health. Each breath you draw is a life, and each precautionary measure is important. A prompt diagnosis, changing some of your habits, and seeking medical advice can eliminate further degradation of conditions and allow you to preserve your lungs in the future.
Some damage may be managed or slowed with early detection, quitting smoking, healthy diet, exercise, and medical care, but severe lung damage is often permanent.
Air pollution, smoking, second-hand smoke, infections, and lifestyle choices like lack of exercise are the top contributors.
Early signs include frequent coughing, breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness, and reduced stamina during daily activities.
World Lung Day 2025 focuses on raising awareness about lung health, the damage caused by pollution, smoking, and unhealthy habits, and how to protect your lungs.
