Hypertension is not just a disease; it is one of the most deadly silent killers known to mankind because it can cause strokes, heart attacks, damage to the heart and kidneys, and dementia. However, the good thing is most of our older people have realised the dangers of hypertension, and they are managing it better because if you can control your hypertension by simple lifestyle management, you can actually reduce your dependence on medications and sometimes stop the medication altogether.

Simple lifestyle changes to control hypertension

According to Dr Praveen Gupta,Chairman - Marengo Asia International Institute of Neuro & Spine (MAIINS), Gurugram, here are simple lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of hypertension:

Daily walking can help lower blood pressure

Most importantly, take a 30-minute walk every day, at least five days a week. Walking actually helps to recirculate your blood flow; it energises your body and changes your hormonal balance, thus reducing hypertension.

Healthy eating habits for better heart health

The next important thing is mindfulness. Today, the market is full of processed foods which look very attractive, but they are full of sugar, salt and fat. Even our common bhujia and namkeen are full of salt and fat. Avoiding such high salt, sugary, and fatty foods and focusing on fruits and vegetables can reduce the blood pressure significantly and also the overall risk of stroke and heart attack.

Good sleep supports blood pressure control

The third thing is good sleep. Good sleep is the natural restorative mechanism of the body and brain. When you sleep well, the hormonal regulation leads to less cortisol, less inflammation, and less adrenaline, which means the blood pressure is lower, the cholesterol is lower, the sugar is lower, and the overall the impact of blood pressure is reduced in your body.

Stress management is important for hypertension

Last, but most important, is managing stress. The body's cortisol levels rise a lot during a stress, resulting in higher insulin and blood pressure, which are not good news for your body. Therefore, if you can learn to cope with stress and control it and you can prioritise your goal in life and start to do something to relax yourself; creating hobbies and maintaining relationships can help to decongest your mind and balance your body.

Put another way, if you can do all those things, exercise regularly, sleep well, eat properly, and master your stress and anxiety you can keep your blood hypertension under control significantly without taking medication.

Why regular blood pressure monitoring matters

Even when taking medication for your blood pressure, checking this on a regularly scheduled basis will be important, though, as blood pressures can spike up suddenly without warning. Closely monitor your blood pressure from time to time to adjust the medicine if necessary, particularly during the transition from one season to the other or transition from one climate to another.

Regularly checking can lower your risk of stroke, heart attack, dementia and kidney disease by 50% or more, if you can fit it into an overall healthy lifestyle.
