Major risk factors for heart diseases are high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol, smoking and obesity. Scientific data shows that one can reduce the risk factors of various heart diseases such as heart attack, stroke, or the ill effects of atherosclerosis by incorporating certain preventive measures like healthy diet, cardio-fitness exercises and therapies. Mr Puneet Rehani, Physiotherapist at Delhi-based AktivOrtho tells you about these therapies that can help.
Why and how these therapies help
Mobility exercises (low intensity exercises) for joints which includes stretching and strengthening exercises for muscles by using physiotherapeutic equipment (resisted band, small weight balls and weight cuffs) are great for a healthy heart. But, all these therapies must be done under the supervision of a trained physiotherapist and after consultation with a person's treating physician.
Here are some therapies that work best for cardiac fitness.
Weight shifting exercises: These exercises help activate joint receptors of the body that help improve the tone of your muscles and strengthen both static as well as dynamic balance of your body.
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)technique: This technique helps create a balance between your nervous and muscular system, which helps strengthen the co-ordination between the two. This balance helps strengthen your heart by pumping more blood to it and strengthening the muscles it is made of.
Mirror Therapy, Motor Imagery, Constrained Induced Movement Therapy(CMIT): These are advanced techniques in which the affected side of body is trained by using the non affected side, thereby improving the function of the body. This helps keep you healthy if you have suffered a heart related stroke and one side of your body is weaker that the rest of your body.
