Endometriosis and its health risks: Endometriosis is a serious health problem in women and many young girls around the world. But, it remains undiagnosed for many, until they face excruciating symptoms and debilitating discomfort. The condition is often referred to as a 'silent threat', because it has many hidden symptoms that warrant a thorough check-up, which does not happen in a lot of cases. It is important for women to not take any symptoms lightly, and consult with an expert without any further delay. According to Dr Prachi Sarin Sethi, a senior consultant - obstetrician, gynecologist and laparoscopic surgeon at Motherhood Hospitals, Gurgaon, endometriosis is one of the most misunderstood conditions in women, which can impact their fertility and their overall well-being.
The doctor explains that endometriosis occurs when the tissues that are similar to the uterine lining start to grow outside of the uterus, leading to severe complications such as persistent pain, inflammation, and even organ damage in some extreme cases. The exact cause of endometriosis, however, is not yet known, Dr Prachi states.
Various factors can contribute to endometriosis in women, including genetics, significant issues with the immune system, and hormonal imbalances. "Endometriosis often goes unnoticed at the initial stage, despite affecting millions of women worldwide. This is mostly because the symptoms associated with this condition can mimic those of regular menstrual discomfort. Endometriosis is indeed a silent threat that needs to be detected and addressed early," says the expert.
According to the doctor, these are the four serious symptoms of endometriosis that must not be ignored.
Dr Prachi concludes by saying that if a woman experiences any of these aforementioned symptoms, she must immediately consult with a gynecologist. It can help with the proper diagnosis of a serious condition like endometriosis early on, before it worsens. "Early detection and diagnosis can help save lives. This can be achieved by going for regular checkups and screenings. These routine screenings can help you get vital insights about your overall health and sight abnormalities promptly."
