We live in a democratic country, yet our freedom and right to speech is most times suppressed. The brutal rape of a medical student in Delhi in 2012 instigated various reactions, not only from common people like you and me but also the political class. While the common man was enraged, many politicians went ahead and made pitiful comments blaming the girl for the crime, like 'these are expected in a country like ours where women are not respected.' While the patriarchal society in India is many times blamed for thoughts, like those of these politicians, the limit of one's patience is crossed when one of the accused blames the victim for the act and death. The accused, who is serving his punishment in Tihar jail, was interviewed by BBC for a documentary, during the shoot of which he made ludicrous statements, blaming the victim for her death. The BBC documentary titled 'India's daughter' has been banned in India once again raises the question about the type of democracy we live in. With International Women's Day on 8th March, ban on the documentary further emphasises the fact that India as a country is not willing to accept the brutal reality of the existence of such a thought process which insults womanhood to unexplainable heights. The government can try all it wants to prevent truth and opinions from reaching people but the opinion of young women is of prime importance.
These young women were asked to read out horrendous comments on rapes by politicians that influence and rule our country and the punishment for the rape accused. Their reactions are priceless!
