When your period crams slowly start to kick in, the first things you reach for are a bottle of hot water and ibuprofen. Sex may be one of the last things on your mind during your periods. But before you cringe and step back from sex understand that having an orgasm can actually help relieve menstrual cramps. Gynaecologist Dr Anindita Dhar explains the connection between sex and menstrual cramps.

Orgasm relieves menstrual cramps

When you hit the climax your blood rushes to the uterus which relieves the cramps. At the same time, your body releases chemicals that function as painkillers. When you orgasm, your body releases oxytocin and dopamine that can act as pain relievers to help you get rid of the worst period cramps. Moreover, having an orgasm helps to get rid of the pent up tension and stress in your body, so you automatically sleep better at night. When you hit the climax, your body also releases endorphins which help ease stress and increase relaxation. Orgasm releases mood-enhancing hormones like serotonin and dopamine-making it a natural and healthy way to fight depression. Say no to these 6 foods when you are suffering from menstrual cramps.

Tips

So sex during periods is a total win. As sex during this time can be messy, you can put a bath towel on the bed or place a bed sheet before you start the act. If you are uncomfortable doing it on the bed, another sexy way to get into the act is to get busy in the shower. However, ignore red clumps during or after sex as it is normal during menstruation. If you are not open to the idea of having an intercourse during your periods, do not forget that flying solo between the sheaths will give you as much relief as having sex with your partner.
