World Heart Day: Why young urban India is at risk of heart attacks

We have been reading and hearing about young men and women dying due to heart attack, and the incidence has become more prevalent among the urban population. The age of people susceptible to heart attacks or cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) has come down by 10-15 years at least, and we have been seeing increasing cases of heart attack between the age group of 25 to 35 years. The young is affected more than the old these days. Here Dr Praveen Kulkarni, Consultant- Cardiologist, Global Hospitals Mumbai, speaks on the abysmal condition of heart health in India. Here are 12 signs that say your heart is in trouble.

Scary situation

Cardiovascular disease is quickly becoming the number one killer for both men and women. Though the prevalence of CVD risk factors is higher in urban population, yet it is increasing at an alarming rate in rural population, which is a serious threat to the nation. Since a majority of Indians live in rural area, CVDs may be widespread. The major causes of cardiovascular diseases in these areas are:

  • Tobacco use
  • Physical inactivity
  • An unhealthy diet
  • Use of alcohol

Nowadays, people are also succumbing to heart problems due to stress and food habits. Here are four ways stress is damaging your heart.

The reasons

What is more surprising is that the patients dying due to heart attack do not have family history of the disease, neither do they suffer from any lifestyle diseases such as diabetes or hypertension, nor do they smoke or drink, which are common reasons for blocking of arteries. There are two things that contribute towards cardiovascular disease risk:

Wrong eating habits: Today, the quality of diet and the fast food culture is ruining the younger generation. Earlier heart attacks or CVDs were common in the 45 to 60 age group, but now it is also prevalent in 25 to 35 years olds. Also, with modernisation and automation, physical activity is almost non-existent. Here are things that are affecting your heart more than high cholesterol.

Easy availability and access to junk food, which is rich in trans fats and refined sugar, is a major cause of concern for cardiologists. The urban working class is used to junk food (deep-fried food items) as it is convenient and quick, but they are seldom concerned about the harm including the possibility of a heart attack. The fat consumption per individual is anywhere between 9 and 22 grams in rural India while in urban regions the fat consumption for individuals hovers between 25 and 45 grams, which is dangerous. Here are 10 ways to keep your heart healthy.

Uncontrolled stress: The main reason that has been linked with the deaths due to CVD is stress. Today, the urban young, both men and women, are under tremendous stress, which can be attributed to work, health, money, society, peer pressure, etc. This coupled with unhealthy eating habits and food quality has led to an increased number of people suffering from CVDs and heart attacks. The sedentary lifestyle also has a huge impact. People use to jog, cycle or walk, but sadly it is completely missing, especially in the younger generation. Here are some heart-friendly drinks to keep your heart young forever.

What can you do

In order to lead a healthy life, one must cut down on the intake of trans fat and refined sugar like bakery products and junk food and must take extra efforts towards doing some physical activities, such as jogging, cycling, walking etc.

A simple modification to the routine can give a healthy heart. Just taking 10,000 steps daily, the chance of heart attack or CVDs are reduced drastically. So get up and get moving!
