Eyelid twitchingI am 43 years old. The lower eye lid of my right eye started twitching two weeks back. Sometimes, it keeps fluttering for several hours together or even continues throughout the day. What could be the reason behind this? What should I do?

What you are suffering from is a condition called myokymia. It is a type of eyelid spasm that occurs due to uncontrolled, impulsive contraction of muscles surrounding the eye and eyelids. Like you mentioned, it can start spontaneously and most of times stops on its own. Probably you're straining your eyes too much which is causing the eyelid to uncontrollably flutter throughout the day. Here are some factors that could be causing your eyes to be strained.

  • Excessive physical exertion and fatigue
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress
  • Increased intake of coffee and tea
  • Staring at the computer screen, television, mobile screen or even book for long hours
  • Alcohol consumption and smoking are also known triggers
  • Sometimes, the eye muscles may get strained because you need vision correction
  • Inflammation of the eye muscles due to an allergy or an infections such as stye and conjunctivitis
  • Use of some medications may also trigger eye muscle twitching

For instant relief you should stop straining your eyes and massage your eyelids with your index finger. Blink your eyes hard two-three times. Apply some ice or wipe them with cold water to relax the muscles. To prevent eyelid twitching three things are must: sufficient sleep, reducing stress and limiting caffeine intake.
