I am a 38-year-old female. Since the past few days, every time I get up early in the morning, I end up sneezing for an hour or two, which accounts to around 20 25 sneezes. This has been the routine since the past four days. This is the first time that I am sneezing frequently. Earlier I used to catch a cold once in three-four months. What is the reason for this? What should I do? Please help.
The query is answered by Dr Akshay Challani, Critical Care Specialist and Physician, Akshjyot Clinic, Navi Mumbai.
According to Dr Akshay, sneezing 20 25 times, especially the first thing in the morning could be mostly due to an allergic reaction. And the main cause for this untimely sneezing is attributed to the change in weather, which makes it difficult for the body to adjust to the sudden shifts in the weather. Moreover, drastic change in the environment not only lowers your immunity but also increases your risk of infections, of which triggering an allergic reaction is the most common. Here are some of the common symptoms of allergy you should be aware of!
Another common cause of constant sneezing is not wearing the right clothes (some people are allergic to fine cotton particles or polyester clothing) while going to sleep, which triggers an allergic response as soon as you wake up early in the morning. You should know about these dos and don ts for allergic reactions for effective relief. Also, sleeping in an AC room or right underneath a fan, such that the air blow directly hits your nose, could be a possible reason for early morning sneezing. If the sneezing does not settle down or if you are experiencing it quite frequently then it could be a key sign of sinus problem.
In such cases, avoid going out in an extreme cold weather and also avoid eating chilled foods. Do not drink ice-cold water or ice creams as it might trigger an allergic response, further aggravating your condition. If you know the exact cause of an allergy, then better avoid the allergen or food you are allergic to, to get rid of the condition. However, if the condition fails to subside or persists for more than five days, consult your doctor as it might be an underlying sign of a throat, nasal or sinus infection. And most important, never self-medicate as medicines for allergies can cause side-effects.
