Poop, potty, number 2 -- whatever you may call your stool, it is something we all tend to shy away from talking about. Not only is it thought of as icky, but is also often not a real topic of conversation. But did you know that the way your poop looks and smells can actually be a great indicator of how healthy you are? Want to know how? Dr Mukesh Budhwani MD Physician, Diabetologist, Apollo Clinic, Pune, tells you exactly what you need to know.

When is stool considered healthy?

Dr Mukesh says, "Stool color is often a reflection of what you eat. Various shades of brown are considered normal. As for its shape, stool should ideally be semi solid and the size depends."

A common guide most doctors use is the Bristol chart -- this chart lists the different types of stools, which can then be interpreted by a physician.

Ideally, type 3, 4 and 5 are signs of healthy stool with number 4 being the perfect shape.

How frequently should a person pass motions in a day? What is considered normal?

" It depends on what you've eaten and its composition. However, passing motion 2-3 times a day is considered normal and healthy." says Dr Mukesh.

Are there any signs the person should look out for in their stools that indicate a disease of thegastrointestinal system?

As per Dr Mukesh, here are a few indicators you should look out for.

  • Black stools could indicate bleeding in the stomach or the first part of the small intestine.
  • Pale white or yellow stool could indicate a problem with the drainage of your biliary system, namely your gallbladder, liver and pancreas.
  • Frequent loose motions could indicate diarrhea or a stomach infection.
  • Bright red streaks in your stools could indicate bleeding in your digestive tract. The common causes of rectal bleeding include anal fissure, hemorrhoids.
  • Thin strip like stools could indicate a blockage in your digestive tract. While having such stools infrequently is considered normal, if it happens repeatedly, then it should be investigated by a physician.

Is there any way that a person can help beat some of these symptoms with lifestyle changes?

  • It is essential that a person stay hydrated and drink a lot of water, as our body is made up largely of water and a well hydrated system helps ease the digestive process and prevents constipation.
  • A diet high in fibre and rich in whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and fruits can improve your digestive health.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol, smoking and too much caffeine.
  • Every meal should contain both soluble and insoluble fibers. Therefore eating meals that contain vegetables, whole grains, beans, oat bran, nuts, seeds and legumes is essential for proper digestive health.
